A Blanket Sandwich
âFor Marka,â the dragon answered, âto celebrate the start of our unionâ¦and the end of others.â It cocked its ears and dared Griffon to argue. âShe will share with you, Son of Fae.â
Griffon went to the back of the cabin, produced a shovel, and started digging in the snow fifty yards away, in the trees. The dragon and I watched him, amused.
I shouted, âWhat are you doing?â
âItâs not legal to hunt reindeer without a license. Iâll have to bury the hide and the entrails.â
The dragon huffed. âEntrails? What do you suppose fills my belly? You think I would offer my Marka an undressed meal?â
I moved around to the far side of the carcass and realized it had been slit from stem to stern. âItâs wet, too,â I shouted.
Griffon stopped digging and came to look. He was obviously impressed. âI wonder how far she had to go to find waterââ
âShe can hear you,â she said. âAre you unfamiliar with lakes?â
He pointed. âA lake of iceââ
âWith water beneath.â
Griffon and I looked at each other, both realizing a dragon the size of a massive bulldozer could easily break thick ice. He looked up, then inclined his head. âIs the Son of Fae at liberty to ask questions?â
âOnly because my marka prefers you to live.â
âFor which I am grateful.â He wrapped his arm around my head and planted a kiss on my brow, which drew a Hank-like hiss from the dragon. He was shaking, which proved he wasnât nearly as calm as he pretended. âWe must have a conversation about boundaries, but now is not the time.â He let his arm fall away. âWhat are you called, fearsome one?â
The dragonâs eyes narrowed and she blinked. And just that fast, her dark blue eyes turned green and I knew she was pleased he considered her fearsome. âMy marka has yet to name me.â
âMe?â
âWe are we. We must name ourselves.â
âBut donât you want toââ
âIt is your place.â
I couldnât believe that something soâ¦substantialâ¦had no name to begin with, but then again, she did say sheâd just been born. I thought about the names some of my Highland friends had for their swords. It was more of a Viking tradition, I had assumed. But calling my big pretty friend something like Skyeater or Snowshaker would make her sound like a character for Dungeons and Dragons, which was, I donât know, unworthy.
This was a living, breathing animal with a heartbeat. Yes, she could talk, and yes, she could hunt down a reindeer, kill it and clean it in a matter of minutes, but she was also a female and terrifying, and beautiful. Like the nine sapphires.
I asked Griffon, âHow do you say sapphire in Irish?â
âSapphire.â
That wouldnât do. âHow do you say it in Finnish?â
âSafiiri.â Sa-fee-ir-ee.
Four syllables. Too long. And I didnât like Safi, so I shook my head.
âGemstone is jalokivi.â Yah-lo-kee-vee.
âJalokivi. Kivi.â I looked up at her and tried it out. âKivi. What do you think?â
She bowed her big head. âI am Kivi.â And suddenly, she began to fade.
